    The new Lakeside Park Rain Garden near the Public Library on Lake Menomin is under way and looking great!  The City of Menomonie put the final touches on the excavation and Monday, Oct. 10 volunteers will begin planting native plants in the garden.  This collabortive project between UW-Stout Blue Devil Lake Alliance, TMLIA, City of Menomonie and Dunn County is on schedule and will divert storm water and pollutants from the parking lot and the boat ramp.  Stop by to see the progress!!

    Citing concerns about staffing and lagging enforcement at the Department of Natural Resources, members of a citizens board grilled officials on Wednesday in the wake of a critical audit that detailed shortcomings in the agency's water regulation programs.

    The state's Legislative Audit Bureau found backlogs in the DNR's wastewater program for factories, municipalities and large farms. It also found that the agency issued only a small percentage of violation notices for the cases reviewed.

    Great news for Lake Menomin, Tainter Lake and the Red Cedar Watershed!  The EPA announced it has approved "A River Runs Through Us: A strategy to restore water quality in the Red Cedar Basin".  After years of work by TMLIA, agencies and partners on the Red Cedar Water Quality Partnership Team, the plan to reduce phosphorus by 65% has been approved and opens opportunities for Federal 319 funding.

    Flow gauges are now active on the Red Cedar River above Colfax and on the Hay River above Wheeler.  These gauges are critical to accurately measuring phosphorus and nitrogen in Tainter Lake and Lake Menomin.     Good luck everyone on the 2015 fishing opener!!  Here are a couple updates on walleye and sauger limits for Lake Menomin and Tainter Lake.  For more details click "Read More"  below.  

    All waters downstream of the Tainter Lake Dam including Lake Menomin, Lower Red Cedar River and the Lower Chippewa River will continue to have a 15 inch size limit and a bag limit of five.

    All waters upstream of the Tainter Lake Dam including the upper Red Cedar River and Hay River will have a 3 walleye/sauger bag limit with a 15-inch minimum/ 20-24” protected slot (only 1 longer than 24” allowed).

    3M Approves TMLIA Grant - Please click on the link to read full article

    3M approved a $20,000 grant to TMLIA for a streambank restoration project on Jarrett Creek near the discharge point into Lake Menomin.  This project is a joint effort between between 3M, TMLIA and the City of Menomonie to reduce sediment flowing into Lake Menomin.  A check was presented at 3M in Menomonie to TMLIA on December 12, 2013.  We wish to thank 3M for their commitment and support of this important conservation project!!

    WDNR announced approval of a grant to the Association to address 58 erosion sites on the Red Cedar River above Tainter Lake. Surveying, site visits and a partnership team meeting has already taken place.  Inter Fluve is contracted to develop the project with a partnership team made up of landowners,TMLIA, WDNR, Dunn County Land Conservation, Army Corp of Engineers, Department of Agriculture-NRCS and UW-Extension.  This project runs from Oct. 1, 2013 -June 30, 2014.

    Tainter Menomin Lake Improvement Association applauds the City of Menomonie for the tremendous commitment to street sweeping, especially during the Fall Season!  This ongoing, year-around effort significantly reduces nutrient loading in our lakes, river and streams.  Well done!!  The association urges citizens to help prevent nutrients, leaves and yard waste entering catch basins and waterways.     City of Menomonie Installs New Phosphorus Analyzer - Please click on the link to read full article

    Paul Sterk, Menomonie Wastewater Operator is in the final stages of calibrating a new automated phosphorus analyzer that tests discharge water every 20 minutes, 24 hours a day.  This new system will improve the treatment of phosphorus by providing more frequent and timely responses to phosphorus fluctuations that may occur in discharge water.  This new tool will help ensure that the City of Menomonie maintains quality water discharges to our neighbors downstream.

By improved management of streets, storms sewers, wastewater treatment and run-off retention ponds, the city continues to find new ways to help improve our troubled waters.  The efforts also improve our waterways down stream for our neighbors.  Well done!!

Operating in the often contentious world of policy, TMLIA's first priority to members is our mission of protecting water quality.  That is why the Executive Board unanimously voted to have TMLIA, as an entity, included as a signer in response to the recent letter proposing relaxing phosphorus limits for point sources.
